Department of the Czech Language Welcome to the Czech language at Wikiversity, part of the Center for Foreign Language Learning and the School of Language and Literature. Introduction to the Czech Language Czech [ʧɛk] (čeština [ˈʧɛʃ.cɪ.na]) is one of the West Slavic languages, along with Slovak and Polish. It is spoken by most people in the Czech Republic and by Czechs all over the world (about 12 million native speakers in total). Czech is relatively close to Slovak. In fact, because the Czech Republic (in red) and Slovakia (in blue) were united in a federation for most of the 20th century, citizens of either state are able to understand the other language. This is changing since the velvet divorce between the two states.
