The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland was the first established antiquarian society of Scotland. David Steuart Erskine, the 11th Earl of Buchan, founded the society. The purpose of the society is to study antiquities and the history of Scotland supported by archaiological evidence. The ultimate goal of the society is to promote the understanding and conservation of Scotland. Members are known as fellows, and the society now has over 3500 fellows.
