Philippians 2:1-11, especially vs. 6-11, has long been considered a hymn and is, in fact, commonly referred to as the "Christ Hymn" or "Kenosis Hymn" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenosis). Whether or not the Apostle Paul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostle_Paul) meant to write it as a hymn or as well balanced prose appears to be a matter of debate (http://www.biblicalstudies.org.uk/pdf/philippians_fee.pdf). Nevertheless it has been sung for hundreds of years and is the subject of many of the scripture readings found in The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration. The text of the hymn "At the Name of Jesus", number 235 in our hymnal, is listed as an adaptation of Philippians 2:5-11 and was written by Caroline M. Noel. Also, in 2008 Howard Sloan metricized the passage in 8.7.8.7 to fit the tune of "Ode to Joy" (http://hra.witnesstoday.org/Philippians2Hymn.pdf). The scripture is also the subject or, at least, referenced in numerous modern worship songs such as: "You are My King", "Come, No is the Time to Worship", "Above All", "Shout to The Lord", and countless others.
