This research hypothesis places Atlantis in the Atlantic around the Azores Islands. It hypothesizes that Atlantis existed on the Azores Plateau, and that as a result of an underwater Supervolcanic Eruption the Plateau sank into a Caldera in a process similar to that described by Jake Lowenstern the resident geologist for the USGS in Yellowstone National Park. Dr. Lowenstern describes an entire mountain range disappearing into the most recent Yellowstone Caldera 2 million years ago during a super eruption at Yellowstone National Park. Since this eruption occurred underwater in the Atlantic ocean, it was not as destructive to the environment as an eruption occurring on land. However, it was largely responsible for the end of the most recent ice age, the sudden climate change that trapped Wooly Mammoths in the permafrost of Siberia, many species extinction worldwide, a shift in the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic and together with the end of the last ice age, the climate change and the melting of the North American Ice Sheet, among others occurring in the world at that time. In addition, it caused changes in the coastlines all over the world, eventually, as a result of glacial water runoff. There is no written history of man surviving from 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, so the oral tradition of mankind in many various cultures carries what little records today that remain of the floods and the chaos caused by this tragedy. Then as today over half the population of the world lives within 75 miles from coastlines. Entire Cultures were destroyed and species extinctions are found world-wide that date to this event.
