Castanea pumila

1. Leaves found in a small tree in my front yard

3. Leaf: simple
4. Leaf margin: toothed
5. Leaf arrangement on branch: Alternate
6. Habitat: Understory of [most commonly: drier soils] of upland hardwood forests.
7. The tree is found all over Virginia
8. Fruit; 1-1 1/2 inches long--shiny, dark brown, sweet nut.
