Compromises
editIn total, there were three famous compromises.
- Missouri Compromise of 1820
This compromise was made when Maine and Missouri applied for statehood in 1820. At that time, there were 22 states in the Union, half and half being slave/free. Adding Missouri into the Union as a slave state would give the South control of the senate. Obviously, the North didn't wanted this to happen, and stated they wanted to abolish slavery in Missouri. So in 1820, the Missouri Compromise was made by Henry Clay of Kentucky. This compromise stated that Missouri would enter as a slave state and Maine would enter as a free slave. And as well, Clay proposed that, except for Missouri, all territory gained in the Louisiana Purchase would be banned from slavery, north of Missouri's border.
