In-class exams

edit

I'm not sure if there's any replacement for closed-book in-class exams, or the social aspects of in-person/offline education. You can "flood the market" with questions but I think you're looking at an uphill battle. Search engines are incredibly well-engineered and getting better all the time. I don't think it should be our mission to replace traditional education, instead we should augment it with objective, high-quality material. AP295 (discusscontribs) 17:05, 4 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you on the essential role of closed-book in-class exams. My goal is to enhance those exams by providing a collection of practice exam questions for those exams. The prelims would be only one type of closed-book in-class exams that would be enhanced. In fact, it power of search engines will make closed-book in-class exams even more essential. My problem is with homework and online exams. They are too easily overcome by search engines.
But thanks for commenting!--Guy vandegrift (discusscontribs) 03:21, 5 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sure. I always hated exams, but in some of the most effective courses I've taken myself, our final grades were mostly determined by exam scores, with only a very low weight on homework and assignments. I think the problem with trying to design ever-more-obscure questions is that such questions rarely emphasize or exercise the most important points. At least in computer science, I've seen some really wacky exercises that seemed to miss important fundamentals for the sake of originality and obscurity. Just a thought.
