editIntroduction
edit- Abstract: test if birth order and personality are related. 378 participants reported their birth order and were assessed for the four psychological types: introvert or extrovert, sensor or intuitive, thinker or feeler, and perceiver or judger. Results showed that the only significant results were only children [children who do not have siblings less than 5yrs younger or older] in relation to introvertedness (increased) while middle children have a relation to introvertedness (decreased) and being feelers (increased).
- All proper and big scaled studies concluded that birth order has no effect on the personality (Rohrer et. al, 2015). Adlers supporters focus too much on the birth order and not the situation of the child.
- Carlson et. al, 2006: siblings must be within a 5yr range for birth order effects to be found, as competition is the main force behind effects (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2016).
- Factors: traditional gender roles between sister and brother reduce competition as they play different roles, teeter-totter effect, impaired older sibling, etc (Eckstein et al., 2010, Carlson et. al, 2006).
- First borns: evidence that they are smarter (Herrera et al., 2003, seen as self disciplined and high academic success (Eckstein et. al 2010)
- Second borns: rebellious (Carlson), middle born: sociable, youngest borns: popular, spoiled, dumber, tendency for risky behavior
- Only children: mature faster
Psychological Types
edit- Jung proposed psychological types, and the Myers-Brighs Type Indicator test measures personality on four dimensions (as mentioned above).
- Results produce a 4-letter type, broken down into a possible 16 personality types.
I-E: flow of ones energy, the battle between introverts and extroverts.
S-N: processing detail, sensors focus on concrete details and use common techniques while intuitives investigate the meaning behind those details.
T-F: decision making; thinkers: logic, feelers: emotions.
J-P: living ones life; judgers: organized, perceivers: spontaneous
TIME FOR THE STUDY!!!!
editAim? Investigate relations between birth order positions and psychological types.
- H1: Statistically significant association between birth order and the 16 MBTI types.
- H2: S. S. for middle/youngest born with extroversion.
- H3: S. S. between birth order and S-N
- H4: S. S. between birth order and T-F.
- H5: S. S. between birth order and P-J.
Method? 378 participants who were familar with the MBTI test responded to a discussion post providing their MBTI type and their birth order + stated if 5 yr difference between sibling.
Results?
- H1, no significance!
- H2, no significance! BUT there was significance in only children being more introverted (maybe because they are used to quiet environments and react strongly to loud noise); middle children decreased chance of being introverted ("peace makers" between the siblings, so more emotional nd social as a result).
- H3, no significance!
- H4, no significance! BUT there was significance observed between middle children and being feelers
- H5, no significance!
ISSUES-
- Sensors grossly misrepresented. 15% of the S-N sample when 75% of the worlds population (Boeree 2006). Extroverts underrepresented.
- Self-reported vs personality survey
- Reliability of MBTI.
- Sex of participant was not included, which removes the aspects of gender and culture.
Summary? Should focus on psychological birth order position rather than ordinal position. Provide framework for future research, investigate pscyh. birth order position and forms of identity, such as self concept and self esteem. Needs a more representative sample. Paych. birth order position may be a factor, even if the effects are small.
