Database topics and lessons

edit

Intro to Database was moved to Database Management Systems. An entry level Introduction to Databases was created. An advanced generic course Introduction to SQL is underway.

A generic Topic:Object-relational databases was also started. Product-specific database topics have placeholders or have started departments: Microsoft SQL Server (moved from Introduction to SQL Server), MySQL, PostgreSQL, ... Others such as Microsoft Access, Oracle, etc. may be in order. Instructors and contributors are needed.

Also, Web Design, Java, Perl, PHP, etc. may eventually develop lessons for interfacing with databases through scripts and such. I'm a newbie to databases, but I'm doing what I can. GregMK61 seems to have some interest. Anyone else? CQ 01:10, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I would help. I can think right now of these lessons we should have (please update or modify):

  • DBMS
    • History
    • Design purposes
      • Redundancy and eventual loss of integrity
      • Physical/logical/view layers separation
  • E/R analysis and diagrams
    • Entities and attributes
    • Multievaluated attributes, identificators
    • Relations
      • 1 to 1, 1 to N, N to N
      • Ternary relations. N-ary
      • Discrimination relation
      • Agregates: Attributes of relations
    • Inheritance
  • The w:Relational Model
    • Tables and Keys
      • Primary Key
      • Foreign Keys
    • Integrity and transactions
    • Relational Algebra
      • Union and Difference
      • Projection
      • Product
      • Division
      • Join
    • From an E/R diagram
    • Normalization
      • First N.
      • Second N.
      • ... (and Functional Dependency somewhere by there)
    • Relational Calculus (SQL)
      • select, where
      • From an algebraic expresion
      • sort, group
  • Oracle, Access, MySQL

I will take responsibility of entering Relational Calculus and Algebra along with Query Optimization and all. I have already entreda few things about Files and indices. Though the Chapter number should have been somewhere near 9 I have marked it as 2. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akshar100 (talkcontribs) 10:25, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

What happened?

edit

It seems that this project went dead eight years ago, which is a pity, because we definitely need an open source database textbook.

Is anyone interested in reviving it? I think a good start has been made.
