1/4 hour lab: "Proof of Galileo's velocity transformation rule. Train proof is a thought experiment: Geometric drawing: distances add, more than one clock is needed to measure speed. Clocks must be synchronized. Later: How can we synchronize two clocks?

Lecture: What did we do? I remember looking at a quiz and I remember noting that some equations were missing. I reinserted the missing equations.

3/4 hour lab: Two groups. C and Z do relativity. H and K do quantum mechanics. Both groups will write a summary lab report on their subject, due at the end of the semester. Today, C and Z will explain why it would appear that a person walking at 3 km/hr on a train moving at 50 km/hr might seem to be travelling at 53 km/hr to an observer on earth. Resolved that clock snchronization is achieved by standing in the middle.

No lab today. But we do have a takehome lab worth up to 1/2 hour:

Falling beads on a string One essential lab skill is to efficiently document a procedure, often using a quickly drawn sketch.

  1. Make a quick sketch of the beads-on-string, not taking care to draw the bead spacing to any important scale. Label times,   and the initial heights math>h_0, \ h_1, \ h_2, //...</math>. Draw the paperclips simply and quickly, making them as identical as possible. Place a horizonal line at the "zeroth" paperclip.
  2. Document the procedure in words.
  3. Solve the problem for   where T is a constant.

1.5 hour lab: Recalibrated bead drop experiment. Also looked at standing wave websites.

Lecture: Chapter 17 echoAndString Quiz. Also reviewed:

  1. Meaning of absolute zero and its historical relation to the ideal gas laws.
  2. Why frequency, wavelength, and phase speed are related.
  3. How to calculate the frequency of the n-th normal mode given string length and phase velocity.

Modern Physics: Demonstrated black body (prelude to photons as particles). Discussed websites on "Particle in a Box".

Two hour lab:

  • The first spectacular success of Schrodinger's equation was predicting the energy levels of hydrogen. But the math is simpler of you consider the one dimensional case of Particle in a box
Topic:Advanced Classical Mechanics/The Eikonal Approximation and Classical Particle Motion
  • In order to measure the speed of longitudinal wave in the 100 ft length of string, the class measured Young's modulus (i.e. the spring constant).

1.5 hours lab: Later we will learn that the static field theories of Newton (gravity) and Coulomb (electrostatics) are only approximations. In reality, fields propagate through space, often at the speed of light, but never faster. One way to observe this field propagation in slow motion is to use string and paperclips.

Today we messed arounde with a videocamera to see if it would work.
