Characteristics
editPOGIL activities are implemented using four core characteristics and four common attributes.[3]
The core characteristics of a POGIL implementation are:
- students working collaboratively, typically in groups of 3 to 4 students
- students using activities designed as POGIL activities
- students working on the activity during class time
- student-centered learning, with instructors as facilitators
The common attributes are:
- students have assigned roles
- activities are a first introduction to the topic
- students are not expected to have any prior exposure to the subject
- groups should be able to complete critical thinking questions during a 40 minute activity, but would work on exercises or problems later on their own
