Bacterial Infections

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are the most common infections to occur at any stage of pregnancy. Urine cultures are needed to identify bacteriuria, bacteria in the urine, which is usually Escherichia coli (E. coli). To prevent containation of the urine sample, an antiseptic wipe may be used to cleanse the genital area and the sample is collected midstream. Typical UTIs are treated with antibiotics like Amoxicillin, Ciprofloxacin, Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, etc. If the UTI is severe, hospitalization and treatment with intravenous antibiotics may be required. Pregnant women with urinary tract infections have an increased risk of delivering low birth weight or premature babies.
