Characteristic polynomial

For an ${}n\times n$-matrix ${}M$ with entries in a field ${}K$, the polynomial

${}\chi _{M}:=\det {\left(X\cdot E_{n}-M\right)}\,$

is called the characteristic polynomial of ${}M$.
