A verb is a word or group of words expressing an action, a condition or a state of being.

Categories of Verbs

  1. Action verbs describe physical or mental action.
    • Transitive verb is a verb having a direct object.
    • Intransitive verb is a verb never having a direct or indirect object to receive its action.
  2. Auxiliary (linking) verbs connect the subject of a sentence to a noun or adjective that describes the subject.
  3. Modal (helping) verbs are used before action or linking verbs to convey additional information regarding aspects of possibility or time.
