Enhance, then Transform a Task Using SAMR
editThink of a task you have asked learners to complete. Using the example provided below, show how you would move this traditional task through the different stages of the SAMR Model. To add your response:
- Click the Edit tab at the top of the page to edit the table below.
- In the Edit window, scroll down to the section that starts with Your Turn.
- Using Your Turn as an example, type your responses into one of the blank sections below.
- Click Show Preview to view your responses
- Click Save Page to save your responses to the page.
Traditional Task | Substitution | Augmentation | Modification | Redefinition |
Definitions | Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change. | Technology acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement. | Technology allows for significant task redesign. | Technology allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable. |
Example: Writing a paper | Typing the paper in a word processor | Using spellcheck to help with spelling errors | Collaborating on a paper in real-time with peers in GoogleDocs | Writing a blog to share with the world |
Your turn | Example of Substitution | Example of Augmentation | Example of Modification | Example of Redefinition |
Students write their answers to a test on answer sheet on their screen. | The teacher can see the students' answers and make corrections. | Students enter their answers and get direct feedback from the program. | Students can see each others' responses and make comments. | |
SAMR Pedagogy Wheel
editThe SAMR Model pedagogy wheel was developed to match up with Bloom's Taxonomy of learning. It shows which apps have the potential to create higher order thinking opportunities and also reach the higher levels of the SAMR model. REMEMBER: It is not about the app! It is about the task!
In Summary
editUpon completion of this wikiversity lesson, you should be able to take a non-technology learning task and choose a method for enhancing the task at each level of the SAMR model. Each segment of this lesson was chunked to meet smaller learning goals that build upon each other to help you reach the ultimate goal of being able to enhance and transform learning tasks with technology. We hope we were successful in our instructional mission and we have helped you meet all the below objectives.
Objectives
- State the purpose of the SAMR model.
- Identify the word that each letter of the SAMR model represents.
- Match each of the four SAMR stages to their definition.
- Given the SAMR model, identify each level in the SAMR model.
- Define “technology tool”
- Match a technology tool with a non-technology learning task
We encourage you to continue thinking about technology integration using the SAMR levels. It is our hope that the next time you integrate technology, you will instantly know whether the new task is enhancing or transforming the learning environment.
