The first example was a scene from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" in which a teacher is taking roll. He calls the name "Bueller" many time and nobody responds, so he simply repeats the name. This is non-example of receiving: the students are choosing not even to receive the message, let alone respond, value or any of the other stages.

In the "Shall We Dance" example

Valuing - here is an example of valuing. Homer Simpson quickly reaches the valuing stage.

Homer: Aw, twenty dollars! I wanted a peanut!
Homer's Brain: Twenty dollars can buy many peanuts!
Homer: Explain how!
Homer's Brain: Money can be exchanged for goods and services!
Homer: Woo-hoo!
