Indigenous and Intercultural Health/Community Focused Project

Consisting of:

1. Background Research and Proposal (500 words/person) 15%
2. Report, Presentation & Review (1500 words/person) 40%

Brief overview of the Community Project

a) Proposal (1,000 words per person, 10%)

You will be encouraged to work in small groups of 2-4 students (desirable but not compulsory).

OPTION ONE - CULTURAL SAFETY AUDIT

• identify a health or community service that you can conduct an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural safety audit with

Consider issues, such as, your group's health interest or focus, access, convenience and feasibility

Choose a cultural safety audit tool to use, for instance, Making Two Worlds Work, Reconciliation Australia's recommendations for Reconcialiation Action Plans or another audit tool.

What will you assess, how will you assess it, where you will assess it, why is it important to assess?

Consider if you need access to the health service and will you need permission or consent

Consider if you will give the health service feedback on your audit and how you could do this

Who will be responsible for doing which parts and by when?

How will your group problem solve possible issues that arise?

Which areas of your own intercultural health competency (IHC) are you going to develop and self-evaluate?

How will you prepare your final report and presentation?

• Submit your plan for peer review, revise based on peer review feeback and then implement it

OPTION TWO - COMPARISON OF TWO SERVICES

• Identify two organisations, one organisation should provide services for a cultural specific group and the second organisation should provide services for a more general population.

For instance, organisations that provide services for culturally specific groups could be The Greek Welfare Society, The Russian Welfare Society, CO AS IT, the Chinese Welfare Association and there are many more. Organisations providing more generalist population services, could be, a community health centre, a hospital, The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, local government and there are many more.

• Prepare a project plan

Decide what criteria will you use to compare the organisations. For instance, populations using the service, aims of the service, reason for establishment, services offered, look and feel of promotional material (eg websites), who is on the organisations' board etc. You should have ten comparison points.

How will you compare the two services?

Who will be responsible for doing which parts and by when?

How will your group problem solve possible issues that arise?

OPTION THREE - PROFILE OF A CULTURAL GROUP

• Identify a cultural group to develop a profile about.

This will include interviewing three people from this cultural group so consider who is in your group's networks of family, acquaintances and friends.

• Prepare a project plan

Decide what you will include in the profile, for instance, the cultural groups demographics, health profile, services or programs that target the group, health service access issues, strengths of the group etc. You should have at least ten questions or areas for investigation.

Where will you obtain this information from?

Decide what questions you will ask the three people to be interviewed.

Decide how you will record interviews and compare them.

• Submit your plan for peer review, revise based on peer review feeback and then implement it

b) Peer Review of other's proposal (500 words, individual, 10%)

Use the Proposal assessment criteria to provide constructive feedback to another group's proposal. Balance encouragement and positive feedback with suggestions for improvement and/or further ideas to consider.

c) Community Focused Project Report (1,500 words equivalent per person, 40%)

This includes a brief written summary report (750 words per person) and an online visual presentation, include any products you may have created as part of the project. You will need to demonstrate:

• How you have incorporated suggestions from your peer evaluation
• How you have addressed the assessment criteria
