THYR'SIGER. Carrying the thyrsus; an epithet descriptive of Bacchus and his followers (Senec. Med. 110. Id. Hipp. 753.), who carried that instrument on their shoulders, when engaged in celebrating the Bacchanalian rites, in the manner exhibited by the figure subjoined (Thyrsiger/1.1), which is copied from a painting at Pompeii, representing several of the usages connected with a sacrifice to Bacchus.
