SUBARMA'LE. An article of clothing, the precise nature of which is not satisfactorily ascertained. Some suppose it to be so termed from passing under one shoulders (armus), like an exomis (see the wood-cut s. v.); others from being worn under the body armour (arma), like the equestrian statue of N.
