STAPES or STAPIA. A word found in some inscriptions, evidently not of an early character, in which it signifies a stirrup. It appears to be formed from the German staff, a step; and though inserted in the Latin dictionaries is to be considered as a word of modern invention, for which there is not the slightest ancient authority.
