OSSA'RIUM and OSSUA'RIUM. A case of marble, stone, or other material within which a more valuable vase, containing the bones and ashed of the dead were frequently enclosed, when deposited in the sepulchral chamber. (Inscript. ap. Grut. 1043. 1. Ib. 915. 3. ossuarium viva sibi fecit. Ulp. Dig. 47. 12. 2.) The example (Ossarium/1.1) represents the original case, in which the cinerary urn of Agrippina was enclosed when deposited in the mausoleum of Augustus, as testified by the inscription upon it; and is now preserved in the Capitol at Rome.
