MARRA. A sort of hoe with a broad head (lata, Columell. x. 70.), indented with teeth (Id. x. 88.), which was employed in gardening and husbandry, for tearing up and clearing away weeds and fibrous encumbrances from the ground, &c. (Plin. H. N. xvii. 35. § 4. Juv. xv. 166. Columell. ll. cc.) The example (Marra/1.1) shows the head of an instrument corresponding with the above description, which was found in the tomb of one of the Christian martyrs at Rome, with which he had probably been tortured.
