JACULATO'RES. Javelin men; furnished by the allies to the Roman armies, and so termed from the dart (jaculum), which they used, in contradistinction to the slingers and archers (funditores, sagittarii); though all three were classed amongst the light-armed troops, and were employed in the same service, to commence a battle by annoying the enemy with showers of their missiles.
