GUBERNA'TOR (κυβερνήτης). A helmsman or pilot, who sat at the stern to steer the vessel (Cic. Sen. 9.), gave orders to the rowers, and directed the management of the sails. (Virg. Aen. x. 218. Lucan. viii. 193.) He was next in command to the magister, and immediately above the proreta. (Scheffer, Mil. Nav. p. 302.) The illustration (Gubernator/1.1) is from a bas-relief found at Pozzuoli.
