ELLYCH'NIUM (ἐλλύχνιον, θρυαλλίς). The wick of a candle or oil-lamp; usually made with the pith of a rush, or the coarse fibres of flax, or of papyrus. (Vitruv. viii. 1. 5. Plin. H. N. xxiii. 41. Id. xxviii. 47.) The illustration (Ellychnium/1.1) represents a small Roman lamp, with the wick burning.
