editCRUPPELLA'RIUS. A Celtic word employed by the Gauls to designate a particular class of men who fought as gladiators, clothed from head to foot in an entire suit of armour. (Tac. Ann. i. 43. Lamprid. Alex. Sev. 56.) Men thus accoutred were termed cataphracti or clibanarii by the Persians, and cruppellarii by the Gauls. See the illustration s. CATAPHRACTI.
