CAPRIMUL'GUS. A milker of goats; the milk of which animals was extensively used by the ancients. (Catull. xxii. 10.) Properly speaking, the caprimulgus was a slave belonging to the familia rustica, but in the illustration (Caprimulgus/1.1), from a painting at Pompeii, he is represented as a genius, pursuant to the common practice of the ancient schools in similar cases.
