This is the beginning of "The Department of Folk Music" in "The School of Creativity (just a stub for now). Ray Calvin Baker (talk) 00:30, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Many senior citizens remember folk songs they learned in their youth. They like to sing them, read stories about their origins and history, and some are even creative and bold enough to add verses to old folk songs, or to create entirely new songs to share with their friends.

"Sing-along" activities can be greatly facilitated when song lyrics and arrangements for simple but suitable instrumental accompaniments can be made easily available. Wikimedia Commons seems like a convenient place to store such public-domain material. Projection of suitable graphical displays can be usefully employed by groups of any size, from simple equipment -- a laptop computer connected to a projector and to the internet.

This Department is intended to support all of these purposes, and to encourage wider participation and use of the Wikiversity. It is my hope that this Department can be expanded to support the "sing-along" activities of the Senior Center of Caroline County (Maryland) In the town of Denton. I expect that the support and participation of my friends there can productively guide the expansion of this Department. Ray Calvin Baker (talk) 00:30, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain

edit

This is one of the songs we enjoy singing together at the Caroline County Senior Center. We have not yet performed it correctly, with the silly motions, but we have been having fun trying.

("Toot! Toot!" -- pull the cord on a riverboat's steam whistle)

She'll be comin' 'round the mountain, when she comes: "toot! toot!"
She'll be comin' 'round the mountain, when she comes: "toot! toot!"
She'll be comin' 'round the mountain,
She'll be comin' 'round the mountain,
She'll be comin' 'round the mountain, when she comes: "toot! toot!"

("Whoa, back!" -- pull on the reins of the six white horses)

She'll be drivin' six white horses when she comes: "Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
She'll be drivin' six white horses when she comes: "Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
She'll be drivin' six white horses,
She'll be drivin' six white horses,
She'll be drivin' six white horses when she comes: "Whoa, back! toot! toot!"

("Scratch, scratch!" -- old red flannel underwear itches!)

She'll be wearin' old red flannels when she comes: "Scratch, scratch! Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
She'll be wearin' old red flannels when she comes: "Scratch, scratch! Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
She'll be wearin' old red flannels,
She'll be wearin' old red flannels,
She'll be wearin' old red flannels when she comes: "Scratch, scratch! Whoa, back! toot! toot!"

("Whack, whack!" -- chop off the head of the old red rooster.)

Oh, we'll kill the old red rooster when she comes: "Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
Oh, we'll kill the old red rooster when she comes: "Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
Oh, we'll kill the old red rooster,
Oh, we'll kill the old red rooster,
Oh, we'll kill the old red rooster when she comes: "Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back! toot! toot!"

("Yum! Yum!" -- rub your tummy)

Oh, we'll all have chicken an' dumplin's when she comes: "Yum! Yum! Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
Oh, we'll all have chicken an' dumplin's when she comes: "Yum! Yum! Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back! toot! toot!"
Oh, we'll all have chicken an' dumplin's,
Oh, we'll all have chicken an' dumplin's,
Oh, we'll all have chicken an' dumplin's when she comes: "Yum! Yum! Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back! toot! toot!"

("Hi, Babe!" -- wave, "hello!")

Oh, we'll all come out to meet her, when she comes: "Hi, Babe!, Yum! Yum! Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back, toot! toot!
Oh, we'll all come out to meet her, when she comes: "Hi, Babe!, Yum! Yum! Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back, toot! toot!
Oh, we'll all come out to meet her,
Oh, we'll all come out to meet her,
Oh, we'll all come out to meet her, when she comes: "Hi, Babe!, Yum! Yum! Whack, whack! Scratch, scratch, Whoa, back, toot! toot!

This has not yet been put into a form suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Content first, then nice formatting. Ray Calvin Baker (talk) 00:56, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
