Monroe Elementary Second Grade - 1949
Monroe Elementary School was a segregated black school in Topeka, Kansas. Teachers like Miss Edna Vance provided an excellent education. However, the US Supreme Court ruled that
segregation (separation) violated students’ rights to “equal protection of the law.” The court also found that segregation had a negative impact on the development of African American children.
