Summary

Description
English: This diagram for the Wikiversity:Special relativity and steps towards general relativity course is used in showing that the coordinate typically called x is a scalar field. This is a small step towards explaining the algebra of tensor fields. A scalar field is itself a (0,0) tensor field.

octave source code

The .svg version of the file, along with a better quality encapsulated postscript file, is produced by

  • the following octave source code,
  • in a local directory called /tmp
  • the .svg file is about 260 times or so as big as the source code
  • the .eps file is about 50 times or so as big as the source code

n_dots=30; # a small number of points - keep postscript file size small
x=linspace(-1,1,n_dots);
y=linspace(-1,1,n_dots);
xmat=repmat(x,n_dots,1);
imagesc(x,y,xmat)
