DescriptionBeauty Shop Harlem.jpg |
English: 16 Oct 1935 --- Harlem, the section of New York inhabited by Negroes, is the largest "Negro City in the World." It is estimated 300,000 Negroes are crowded together in the comparatively small area. It is a city within a city, with Negro policeman, letter carriers and other public servants, although many shops are conducted by whites a good percentage have Negro proprietors or managers. Harlem was theatres and night clubs specializing in colored shows; it has several newspapers; many beauty parlors, which are famed for their ability to remove kinks from hair, are to be found in this environment. Like most cities it has a residential neighborhood reserved for the wealthier class. But its slum area, in proportion to the population, is much larger than other cities. Observers have found that Harlem has been hit much harder in the Depression than any other section of the city, --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS |
