Experiential learning is about acquiring new knowledge and skills through doing (or "learning by doing"), which is often contrasted with rote- or didactic or passive-style learning (e.g., it contrasts with Paulo Freire's banking education).
Experiential learning philosophies and principles are often cited as underlying various forms of active learning such as outdoor education.
Experiential learning concepts and terminology were significantly formalised by John Dewey, such as in his book "Experience and Education".
