Plant descriptions

• Range and habitat: Well-spaced woodlands and fields/clearings, originally from Europe, have naturalized into North America.
• Appearance and identification of plant: A bulbous perennial. The bulb is pale yellow or brown to white, covered with a papery reddish brown skin similar to an onion. The texture is similar to a water chestnut. The leaves above the ground are narrow and flat, though fleshy, up to a foot long but averaging 6-8 inches. The color is greenish-blue. The texture is smooth and almost glossy to the touch, though the edges are often hardened and sharp.
• Appearance and identification of flower: A single golden-yellow colored cup, often crimpy-edged. This cup is surrounded by large petals that are the same vivid yellow as the cup. The cup is commonly known as a trumpet.
