churlatan. n. An invented word, compounded of “churl” and “charlatan,” denoting an individual who justifies his or her opinion on a contested and controversial subject by crediting only the evidence that supports his side of the argument, and masks the dishonesty of his position by aggressively attacking proponents of the opposition. Example: “The churlatan railed against anyone who dared to suggest that severe variations in weather patterns are consistent with the models of global warming.” Coined by Paul Janssen, Park Ridge, New Jersey, 2011.
