The workshop focused on material exploration, not only choosing the right material but also selecting a thoughtful connection detail was integral to the design. The project was a redesign of the student lounge, located in the Carleton Architecture building. With a group of 11 students the design tasks were divided into furniture, kitchen, shelving and signage. My role in the project along with another student was the kitchen element. Our design was composed of hanging upper cabinets, lower cabinets, operable garbage and recycling drawers, and a solid smoked maple butcher block countertop. The materials selected by the group were maple, rich smoked maple, along with metal and accents of red. These materials were used in each element designed. Three datum lines were chosen for levels of low seating, high seating and counter top to create a flow and consistency throughout the lounge.
