Located in the ByWard Market in downtown Ottawa at the corner of Dalhousie and St Patrick, the history of the past fires in the area were a starting point for my project. Beginning with the idea of fire and the 4 elements of architecture as Gottfried Semper stated; “The hearth, the roof, the enclosure and the mound” and he also continued, “around the hearth the first groups gathered.” Using load bearing masonry as a primary structure the building is shaped as a cube with a central masonry core chimney with a contrasting light weight glass curtain wall on the street facades. The hearth is a place that people are drawn to and gather around. The hearth, the central element of the design, is intended as the focus which will draw people into the space.
