At first scientists thought that each neuron was important to the operation of the brain, however as the size of the probes meant to connect to neurons in the brain got smaller, it became possible for scientists to note, that, especially in the cerebral cortex, neurons tended to form groups, where hundreds of neurons would activate, but only a token few would actually fire. The idea that hundreds of neurons would contribute to the firing of a few, was called Neural Groups by some and the Center Surround Function by others. While we are still not sure exactly how it happens it is thought that there is some mechanism whereby neurons naturally self-organize into groups. Others have noted that the center surround function is mostly found in the left hemisphere of the cerebral cortex, and that the right hemisphere operates differently, which might be the basis of bicameral mind theories.
