The Abenaki people, also known as the Abnaki, Wabanaki or the Alnôbak, are one of the indigenous tribes of northeastern North America, some of the original occupants of New England, southern Quebec and the southern Canadian Maritimes. The name Abenaki is derived from the word Wabanaki, the eastern Algonquian word for "Dawn Land", which is their name for their homeland. The Abenakis were one of the original five members of the Wabanaki Confederacy.
