Luke 2:14 - Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. This passage is not a song in its original context, but spoken praise to God from the lips of angels (Luke 2:13). However, it has been used in a number of songs since. It is well known in use of the “[Bold texthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_in_Excelsis_Deo#Present-day_Latin_text Gloria]” section of Catholic masses. This same Latin translation of the text is used in the chorus of “Angels We Have Heard on High”. The English text is also used in a popular song by Ken Read called “Hallelujah”. It is also known for being included in Handel’s Messiah in “Glory to God in the Highest”. As I’m sure you can tell, some of these songs, such as “Angels” are commonly used for congregational singing. Others, such as “Gloria” and “Hallelujah” are more performance-oriented songs. As far as context is concerned, this scripture appears right after the birth of Jesus. This was simply meant to be a confirmation from God that Jesus was, in fact, sent from heaven. This verse can be easily manipulated to fit whatever music you wish to set it to. For example, “highest glory to God” or “peace on earth” is simply switching the word order.
