Costume at the Duchess of Devonshire's 2 July 1897 Fancy-dress Ball edit

At the Duchess of Devonshire's fancy-dress ball, William Angus Drogo Montagu, 9th Duke of Manchester, was 20 years old and dressed as a Georgian courtier. He was in the party of the Duchess of Devonshire and stood at the bottom of the staircase and greeted guests as they arrived; they then made their way up the staircase to be greeted by Louisa Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, his grandmother, and Spencer Compton Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire.

He was not seated at the first seating for supper — he was 20 years old — although María Consuelo Iznaga y Clement Montagu, Duchess of Manchester (at 175) was his mother and seated at Table 7; his costume was "made by Mr. W. Clarkson, of Wellington-street."[2]:p. 8, Col. 2a

  • He was dressed in a "Georgian Court costume of white satin and gold brocade; knee breeches with diamond buckles, vest embroidered with gold bullion and fastened with diamond buttons, white silk collar to coat, real lace cravat, and sword."[2]:p. 7, Col. 7a
