| Description |
English: The Strood. The picture shows The Strood, the causeway to Mersea Island. Until 1978 it was thought the causeway had been in use since Roman Times. However radiocarbon dating and dendrochronology of the original foundation timbers gave a felling date of about the year 690. The site of the original Roman road has yet to be determined. The Strood regularly floods especially during spring tides. The locals have resisted moves to raise its level keep Mersea an island! Some locals say the footing in the foreground is the remains of a railway bridge built during the second railway mania between 1900 and WW1 as a result of the Light Railway act. The railway company never completed the work, the only part that ever functioned was The Railway Hotel (aka The Fountain) and even this was demolished a few years ago. Others maintain these were the poles for the electricity supply to the island, a theory I think I favour. |
