OpenStax University Physics: Chapter 12 Problem 37 is the classic ladder/wall problem with a frictionless interaction between the wall and the ladder. It can be shown by that torques exerted by the 70 kg person 3 m up the ladder and the ladder's 10kg mass (centered 2 m up the ladder) are balanced by a force of friction equal to the weight of 13.55 kg. We verify this by calculating force exerted by the wall using the concept of the torque as the product of force and lever arm, where we define the lever arm as the perpendicular distance between the axis (where the ladder meets the ground) and the "line of action". The line of action is shown as the blue dotted line that extends the applied force in either direction. The forces, shown as blue arrows are not drawn to scale. The lever arms are shown in red, and the product of lever arm and "mass" is equals torque (divided by g.) The areas on the left sum to the area shown to the right. The axis is taken as the point where the ladder meets the ground. |
