Rationale |
No free licensed or public domain alternatives known to exist to show asteroid 2012 LZ1 by the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico using the Arecibo Planetary Radar about June 2012. |
Permission |
Fair use claimed. The url for the Arecibo Planetary Radar shows no copyight for this image and the image may be Public Domain. But, the website for the Galleries, which do not include asteroid images, only radio observatory images, states: "These images may be downloaded for non-profit / non-commercial use. For other permissions and credit policies, see our "media services and support" page", which so far I have not found at www.naic.edu/. |

Fair use for Radar astronomy edit
To illustrate the successful radar detection and imaging of asteroid 2012 LZ1, since no picture can be obtained of the asteroid itself.
The image linked here is claimed to be used under fair use as:
- it is a scientifically significant image and apparently the only image of asteroid 2012 LZ1;
- it is of much lower resolution than the original (copies made from it will be of very inferior quality);
- the photo is only being used for informational/educational purposes, even though it may be PUBLIC DOMAIN; and
- its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the article because it shows the successful use of radar astronomy to detect, image, and size this specific Earth-passing asteroid whose actual size is twice that originally reported using optical astronomy, depicted in this article and how it has a significant impact on radar astronomy to the general public.
