Solidarity Economy in Latin America/Cherán K'eri
Cherán is a municipality in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, and one of eleven majority Purépecha municipalities in Northwest Michoacán. It is a self-governing indigenous community, largely free of federal intervention. Following a 2011 civil uprising against crime and corruption, the community reorganized itself so as to live without politicians, prisons, and violence. They strive for indigenous self-determination, municipal security of community, freedom from logging, and security of their forests.
