Portal talk:Linguistics

Is this a question? And why was this page empty? Surely if communication is the basis of the human condition then the study of linguistics should be the fount of wikiness and this page should be overflowing! PCB 24-08-04.

i feel like someone should just lay out hte basics like phonology, morphology, etc.

Here we do desperately need someone to cover actual linguistic topics, like the above phonology, morphology, etc. I've actually been writing articles over several of these things on my own personal wiki, and after I've made more progress I'd be more than happy to transfer over some of what I've written. (I'm in DokuWiki for speed on my modest server, though, so some formatting conversion will be necessary) -- Spack 21:58, 25 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Why is this page seperate from the "Linguistics" wikibook (under anthropology, if you search on the WB home page)? Wouldn't it be most helpful to have all the info in the same place?

The list of language families takes up so much space at the front of this page. Perhaps it would be better to create a seperate page or link to wikipedia's article on language families. Sylfaen 18:58, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Japanese and Korean are not language isolates. They were thought to be, but most lingusts now consider them to be part of the Altaic family. Examples of isolates are Burushaski and Ainu. Edrigu 02:00, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd be more than happy to do some of the grunt work here; after all, I am a lowly undergrad - it's what we're good for! --Kenwolcott 02:39, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Separate courses edit

What this page needs is to be repurposed to be a list of the courses offered by the Wikiversity School of Linguistics, and the current content moved into one of those courses. Otherwise (as someone pointed out), it's just another WikiBook.
