Film Scoring/Theory of Film Scoring/Creating continuity

Learn how to create continuity.

Continuity

There are many kinds of continuity. All of them are very important. Yet, you will rarely notice continuity. The only time you notice continuity is when it is absent. Then it sticks out like a sour thumb.

1. Visual continuity

A motion picture has lots of cuts. If there were no continuity, these cuts would be very annoying and confusing.

When editing, the editor will try to create continuity with the visual image. Crossing the line is an error in continuity.

But no matter how hard the editor tries, cuts are annoying. To make the audience confortable, something needs to create continuity

Ambient sound creates continuity

Sound creates continuity. Crickets throughout an outdoor scene give the scene continuity. With sound creating continity, the audience automatically joins all the images of a scene into a single picture.

Music creates continuity but you need to provide continuity to your musical style.

Continuity of ideas.
